Beginning: How it all started
The first news of Corona appeared in Wuhan Province of China during the eve of New year 2020 when a pneumonia of unknown cause detected on 31 December 2019.
The disease appears to have originated from the Wuhan seafood market where wild animals, including marmots, birds, rabbits, bats and snakes, are traded.
Coronaviruses are known to jump from animals to humans and this is likely to what had happened in the wet market of Wuhan.
On 11 February 2020, WHO announced a name for the new Wuhan Corona Virus disease: COVID-19.
What is Covid -19
Coronaviruses are a large group of viruses that are known to infect both humans and animals.
In humans causes respiratory illness that range from common colds to much more serious infections.
The most well-known case of a coronavirus epidemic was Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which too originated in China in 2002, went on to affect 26 countries and resulted in more than 8,000 cases and 774 deaths.
On January 30, the WHO designated Covid-19 a “Public Health Emergency Of International Concern” (PHEIC), indicating that international action will be required to contain the outbreak.
In the past decade, only five other PHEIC announcements have been made.
2009 swine flu declaration
2014 polio declaration
2014 Ebola declaration
2016 Zika virus declaration
2018–20 Kivu Ebola declaration
If you’ve come to this far scrolling, you don’t want to miss out on any information coming next, the important piece of information: How it spreads and how to stop.
How it spreads
Coronaviruses spread through water droplets or saliva. When a person sneezes or coughs, the droplet or the saliva might contain the virus and you wish you were not there.
But it doesn’t mean being away from sick people can prevent you from Covid-19.
There are chances that the droplets or the saliva of the sick person can get on physical objects like digital devices, lift buttons, stairs banisters, tissue, doorknobs, pen, paper, etc and coronavirus can last up to 72 hours on physical objects.
If we get in contact with any of the contaminated objects, there are high chances they’ll be transmitted into our bodies.
Also, they spread in animal wet markets. The virus is known to come from a snake or a bat.
If you visit any animal wet market, there are high chances that you might carry Coronavirus on you if you get in touch with dead animals.
How to stop: Prevention is Cure
1. Wash, wash and wash
The best way to keep yourself from Coronavirus is to clean your hands frequently.
You never know what you might have touched that was contaminated.
So, don’t be lazy to walk to the washroom every now and then.
Frequently and for no reason, thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.
Also, avoid touching our eyes, nose, and mouth.
2. Follow basic etiquette
Just don’t sneeze or cough openly anywhere. People generally don’t like that and with the Corona outbreak, you don’t want people to look at you in suspicion.
Hence, always carry a handkerchief or tissue paper with you.
Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough and discard the tissue immediately.
Friends planning for a house party and you’re tempted to go?
There is some religious gathering and you want to attend? Either case, don’t even think about it.
Just keep yourself away from any public gathering. If possible, work from home.
Apart from avoiding any sort of gatherings, maintain at least 3 feet (recommended, the more the better) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
Also, don’t share any personal items with them like food, utensils, cups, towels etc.
If they feel discriminated, explain to them this is in the best interest of all of us. Also, avoid public transports and traveling.
5. Say no to street foods
Are you a junk food lover? Answer yes and you’re susceptible to get Covid-19 anytime soon.
Street foods, junk foods are cooked outside and many people go by the stalls.
I guess this explains why you should stop eating outside foods right away.
6. Cook well, eat well
So you can’t resist non-veg even for a day?
Ideally, you should not eat while this outbreak is in the air, but if you really can’t resist the appetite to eat non-veg, make sure it’s bought from a hygienic place and cooked well.
Vegetarians, make sure all the fruits and vegetables are thoroughly washed using vinegar and cooked well.
7. Keep yourself hydrated
Not very fond of drinking water but cold drinks and other processed juices?
I bet you want to change that habit now. Ensure your mouth & throat is moist, never DRY.
Take a few sips of hot water every 15 mins at least. Why?
Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or other liquids will wash them down through your esophagus and into the stomach.
Once there in the tummy, your stomach acid will kill all the viruses.
8. Sanitize hands and wear mask
Always carry a hand sanitizer and apply it often. This ensures your hands are free of any virus contamination.
If visiting any gathering like a vegetable market or supermarket is inevitable, don’t forget to wear a mask.
If wearing a reusable mask, after coming back, wash it immediately. Do not wear a mask for more than 2-3 hours.
9. Avoid Social Media
Since the first case of Corona came into light, social media is overflowing with memes.
Few memes are funny, few are blaming China for this epidemic but a lot are fake.
Use your subconscious mind to evaluate and search any negative news about Corona before blindly forwarding it to all.
Negative news can spread like fire in the Jungle. Creating panic among people could lead to pointless chaos.
Last, needless to say, visit a doc immediately and get your blood checked in case you’re suffering from cough, cold, sour throat or fever.
Don’t visualize the movie “I’m legend” featuring Will Smith.
Such events can only happen in movies and they’ve no realistic value on our lives. Relax and don’t panic.
We human beings have the history to defeat most dangerous epidemics (Plague Epidemic or Black death from 1347 to 1351) and we’ll come over Corona, as well, soon.
As you’re reading this, thousands of medical institutes across the world are busy creating an Antidote.
Meanwhile, people are also being cured and sent home. Corona Virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed at a temperature of 26-27 degrees.
As per the experts, with summer coming in a month, we’ll have a natural shield from the spread of Covid-19.
Thanks for reading. Always good to see you again.
